Antietam National Cemetery houses the graves of 4,776 Union soldiers who died during the Battle of Antietam, Monocacy, South Mountain and other Maryland battles during the U.S. Civil War. At the battle of Antietam, over 23,000 men were killed or wounded.

A contributing factor in Lincoln's issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation, the Battle of Antietam marked the Confederacy's first invasion of the north in September of 1862. Established in as an historic site in 1890, the Antietam National Battlefield marks the site of this battle that killed or wounded over 23,000 men.
