Made up of over 54,000 acres, the Savage River State Forest is the largest facility of its kind in Maryland. There are a myriad of hiking trails and 10 miles of cross country ski trails for visitors to avail themselves of. Pets are welcome, but must be on a leash and under control at all times.

Big Run State Park is made up of 300 acres of Maryland wilderness. There are 30 rustic campsites as well as a youth group camping area; both are open year round.

The New Germany State Park is situated in the Savage River State Forest, just five miles southeast of Grantsville, MD. There are 37 campsites and 11 cabins available to rent. Pets are not permitted in the New Germany State Park.
